ENGR BABATUNDE ADEWALE ODUFUWA AT 70: CELEBRATING A LIFE OF LEARNING AND SERVICE

By Sylvester Udemezue

Seventy years invite reflection on what a life has made possible for others. As we celebrate Engr. Babatunde Adewale Odufuwa, we honour a journey in which professional learning has found expression in educational enterprise, Christian service and a concern for humanity.

His educational journey included studies at Yaba College of Technology and culminated in an honours degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of the District of Columbia, Washington, DC, in 1987. His career also took him through public service, including work with the Federal Ministry of Works and the Federal Housing Authority.

Among his enduring contributions is the establishment of Lagos City Computer College, Lagos City Polytechnic and Southwestern University Nigeria. Building an educational institution gives knowledge a home and creates opportunities for others to develop their abilities. His professional engagement also includes fellowship of the Nigeria Computer Society and service on the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria.

Faith occupies a prominent place in his story. His service as a former Honorary Lay President of The African Church, together with other church and educational leadership responsibilities, connects his public achievements with a vocation of service. The biography prepared for this occasion presents a family man and philanthropist devoted to his community.

Although I am not personally close to Engr. Odufuwa, my relationship with his son, Hon. Tosin Odufuwa, spans more than a decade. Tosin, the National Secretary of the City Boy Movement and Chief of Staff to its Founder and Patron, Seyi Tinubu, is an outstanding and amiable gentleman. I have come to appreciate his discipline, humility, loyalty and thoughtfulness, alongside his intelligence and sound judgment. He is courteous, dependable and discreet, with a calm disposition and a strong sense of responsibility.

These qualities give this celebration a special meaning for me. A tree is known by its fruit; in my view, Tosin’s character offers a worthy reflection of his father’s example and the values nurtured in their home. My appreciation of the celebrant is therefore informed by his documented achievements and by the admirable son I have known over the years. I warmly congratulate the entire Odufuwa family and thank them for the gracious invitation to share in this milestone.

As family, friends and well-wishers gather in Lagos, I pray that Almighty God grants Engr. Odufuwa many more years in sound health, with peace of mind, greater prosperity and the strength to continue serving humanity. May his work flourish, his family remain a source of joy, and his experience continue to guide those who can benefit from it.

Happy 70th birthday, Sir. May God preserve you to enjoy the fruits of your labour and enlarge the good you can still do.

Respectfully,
