TRANSFORMING LIVES, BUILDING HOPE: HOW THE CITY BOY MOVEMENT IS EMPOWERING WOMEN AND STRENGTHENING COMMUNITIES
By Sylvester Udemezue
There are moments in the life of every organisation when its ideals transcend speeches and manifest themselves in concrete actions that directly improve people’s lives. The City Boy Movement’s Mega Empowerment Programme for 1,000 Women across Kano State, held on 27 June 2026 at the Meena Event Centre, Kano, was one such defining moment. Far beyond the distribution of empowerment materials, the programme represented an affirmation of a simple but profound philosophy: sustainable national development begins with empowering ordinary citizens, especially women, whose industry, resilience and enterprise remain central to the economic and social wellbeing of families and communities.
Organised through the Office of the National Director of Women Affairs (the National Women Leader) of the City Boy Movement, Hon. Ummusalma Isiyaka Rabiu, the programme attracted thousands of women from across Kano State. It showcased the Movement’s growing commitment to translating the ideals of the Renewed Hope Agenda into practical interventions capable of creating lasting economic opportunities.
At the heart of the initiative was a carefully designed empowerment package that addressed genuine livelihood needs. Beneficiaries received sewing machines, grinding machines, standing hair dryers, deep freezers, gas cookers, pasta-making machines, food items and other start-up materials intended to support small businesses and encourage financial independence. These were not symbolic gifts. They were productive assets capable of generating sustainable income, expanding household enterprises and creating employment opportunities within local communities.
Speaking during the programme, the Director-General of the City Boy Movement, Hon. Francis Oluwatosin Shoga, reiterated the Movement’s conviction that investing in people remains one of the most effective strategies for reducing poverty, combating unemployment and promoting entrepreneurship. His remarks reflected an important reality: meaningful empowerment is measured not merely by what is distributed today, but by the economic transformation it makes possible tomorrow.
The success of the Kano programme also highlighted the remarkable leadership of Hon. Ummusalma Isiyaka Rabiu, whose growing profile continues to attract national attention. Recently profiled by The Top10 Magazine as a “Rising Northern Political Amazon,” she has been recognised for combining grassroots mobilisation, philanthropy, entrepreneurship and public service in a manner that resonates strongly with women and young people across Northern Nigeria. The publication noted her expanding influence as National Women Leader of the City Boy Movement, her commitment to women’s political participation, her humanitarian interventions through the USIR Foundation, and her appointment as Executive Commissioner for Corporate Services at the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).
Her stewardship of the Kano empowerment programme demonstrated many of the qualities highlighted in that profile. Rather than limiting her office to ceremonial functions, she has continued to champion practical programmes that improve lives, expand opportunities and deepen women’s participation in national development. The Kano initiative stands as a compelling illustration of leadership rooted in service rather than symbolism. The goodwill messages delivered during the event by political leaders, party stakeholders and beneficiaries further underscored the significance of the intervention. They praised the City Boy Movement for complementing governmental efforts aimed at improving citizens’ welfare while encouraging beneficiaries to maximise the opportunities created through the empowerment packages.
Perhaps the most inspiring aspect of the event came from the beneficiaries themselves. Their testimonies reflected hope renewed, confidence restored and fresh determination to build sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their families. Every sewing machine represents the beginning of a tailoring enterprise. Every grinding machine offers the possibility of daily income. Every hairdressing kit opens the door to entrepreneurship. Every freezer, gas cooker and start-up package provides another family with an opportunity to achieve financial independence. That is the true meaning of empowerment.
The Kano programme also reflects the evolving character of the City Boy Movement itself. Originally recognised principally for its grassroots mobilisation efforts, the Movement is increasingly demonstrating that political organisations can also function as vehicles for social intervention, economic inclusion and community development. By investing directly in people, the Movement is helping to build confidence, expand economic participation and strengthen the relationship between leadership and the communities it serves.
The empowerment initiative equally reinforces the importance of women’s leadership in contemporary Nigeria. When women occupy positions of responsibility and are provided with the institutional support necessary to implement people-centred programmes, entire communities benefit. The leadership demonstrated by Hon. Ummusalma Isiyaka Rabiu throughout this initiative offers a practical example of how women continue to shape governance, influence policy and drive sustainable development through compassion, organisation and purposeful action.
As Nigeria continues its pursuit of inclusive economic growth, programmes such as this deserve recognition not simply because they distribute material support, but because they restore dignity, inspire enterprise and create pathways to self-reliance. The City Boy Movement deserves commendation for translating vision into measurable impact. The Director-General, Hon. Francis Oluwatosin Shoga, deserves credit for providing strategic leadership that prioritises grassroots development. Likewise, the National Women Leader, Hon. Ummusalma Isiyaka Rabiu, deserves recognition for successfully delivering a programme that reflects both competence and compassion.
The Kano Mega Empowerment Programme will undoubtedly be remembered as more than a successful event. It will be remembered as a demonstration that leadership achieves its highest purpose when it uplifts people, expands opportunities and transforms hope into tangible reality. If sustained and replicated across the federation, initiatives of this nature have the potential to contribute significantly to poverty reduction, women’s economic advancement, grassroots entrepreneurship and inclusive national development. The City Boy Movement has shown that when vision is matched with purposeful action, communities are strengthened, livelihoods are transformed and hope becomes more than a slogan; it becomes a lived experience.
