The Boy I Raised, the Man You Will Become: An Epistle To GoodWill, My Third Son, At 18

By Sylvester Udemezue

On 08 September 2026, you, my third son, GoodWill Stanley Ejike Udemezue, turn eighteen. I celebrate the gift of your life with gratitude to God and the deep affection of your father watching you assume greater responsibility for your future. Your birthday is an occasion for joy, reflection and prayer: a moment to celebrate the years behind you and consider the life you will build in the years ahead.

Adulthood gives you more room to decide, act and become. It also requires the judgment to recognise that choices have consequences, sometimes reaching far beyond the person who makes them. Freedom becomes meaningful when exercised with an understanding of responsibility to yourself, to other people and to God.

My counsel to you begins with a question I hope you will carry through life: “What kind of person am I becoming through the choices I make?” The answer emerges in ordinary decisions: whether to tell the truth, keep a promise, complete a task, admit a mistake or treat another person fairly.

Character takes shape in these moments, including those for which there is no audience and no applause. I want you to become a man whose word can be trusted and whose presence makes others feel safe. That means respecting women, honouring every person’s dignity and extending kindness to people regardless of what they can offer in return. Strength carries a duty of restraint. Influence brings a responsibility to act fairly. Faith should find expression in conduct.

Within our family, adulthood brings a growing responsibility to contribute to the peace of our home, honour your parents, support your siblings and participate willingly in the work of family life. As parents, we also have a responsibility to listen, explain our counsel and make room for your developing judgment. You must know that you can speak honestly to us, including when you have made a mistake.

Education, disciplined work and useful skills deserve your serious attention. I encourage you to remain curious, accept correction and prepare patiently for the opportunities you desire. Time and money require thoughtful management. Honest work deserves care, even when recognition is slow. Learning from other people’s achievements can inspire progress, provided you give your own development the patience it requires.

Friendship will influence that development. My hope is that you will choose companions who respect your values, encourage your growth and care enough to tell you the truth. Before following a crowd, you should consider its direction. Every invitation deserves judgment; some opportunities carry a price that conscience should never be asked to pay.

The world holds beauty, generosity and possibility. It also contains disappointment, manipulation and unfairness. I pray that experience will deepen your discernment while preserving your capacity for kindness. You should learn to set boundaries, recognise warning signs and seek counsel before pressure becomes a crisis.

Difficult seasons will require patience. When you fall short, I hope you will take responsibility, repair what you can and learn. Asking for help can be a wise exercise of independence. At eighteen, you have much to discover, and I want you to approach that discovery with courage, humility and hope.

Remain humble as you grow in knowledge, achievement and influence. Listen before you judge, give credit generously and remember those whose sacrifices helped you. No success places you above correction, and no position makes you more worthy of respect than another person. Be willing to say, “I do not know,” “I was wrong,” and “Thank you.” Let your achievements deepen your gratitude and your willingness to serve.

Learn also to forgive. When others hurt you, seek healing without allowing bitterness or revenge to govern your life. Forgiveness can release resentment while leaving room for accountability, wise boundaries and the patient rebuilding of trust. When you are at fault, apologise sincerely, make amends and show through your conduct that you have learned. Extend to others the mercy you hope to receive, and forgive yourself as you take responsibility and grow.

I want you to also enjoy living. Ambition should leave room for health, rest, laughter, friendship and the people who love you. Happiness deserves attention in everyday life. May you learn to appreciate a peaceful home, an honest conversation, a useful day’s work and the quiet satisfaction of helping someone. These blessings give life richness even while larger dreams remain unfinished.

A celebration of you, our son, also calls for gratitude to the woman with whom I share the privilege of parenthood. Through my beloved wife, God has blessed our family with seven precious children: GoodLuck, GoodNess, GoodWill, GoodHeart, GoodHope, GoodKind, and GoodFaith. Each name gives me reason to reflect on the goodness we hope our children will carry into the world.

My wife deserves to be honoured for the love, patience, prayers and daily care she gives our family. I appreciate the sacrifices that are easily seen and those quietly made. Her companionship is a blessing to me, and I am grateful for the life we are building together. On this birthday, I celebrate her with affection and respect.

May God preserve her health, renew her strength and bless the work of her hands. May her own hopes flourish. May she receive abundant love, tenderness and happiness, and enjoy long life to witness the good that grows from her labour and devotion.

To you, GoodWill, I now offer a father’s blessing with all the love in my heart. May Almighty God grant you sound health, long life, wisdom and enduring happiness. May He prosper your honest efforts, guide your decisions and open worthy opportunities before you. May you have the preparation to recognise those opportunities and the courage to pursue them.

May God protect your going out and your coming in, strengthen you against temptation and sustain you through adversity. May you enjoy true friendship, lasting love and peace of mind. May prosperity bring you contentment and the means to help others. May you grow in grace and righteousness, and find fulfilment in a life lived with purpose.

My prayer embraces our entire family. Heavenly Father, protect our home from harm and guide us in righteousness. Teach us to speak with kindness, correct with love, forgive sincerely and remain united through every season. Give us health, provision, wisdom and peace. Help us as parents to live the values we teach, and guide each of our seven children towards a life of integrity, faith and service.

Happy eighteenth birthday, my dear GoodWill. You enter adulthood deeply loved, with a family that cherishes you and a father whose prayers go with you. May the goodness in your name become goodness that other people experience through your life.

With love, from Dad,

Sylvester (Udems)
